1. I was not there to meet Wes Hamilton.
2. I think Tim O'Brien wanted to show that women could fight as well as men. When Mary was introduced, I wondered why the U.S. army would allow a girl fresh out of high school to go to her boyfriends camp and stay with him. Mary entered the war a prissy girl in nice clothes that was afraid of dirt and breaking nails. Soon she no longer care how she looked, no makeup, with short hair,, and she learned tricks for combat. Its almost as if her primal instincts were taking over her prissy cerebrum. Towards the end, when she came back, Mark's opinion of her had completely changed. She was a totally different person, a person changed by war.
3. The author presents his own story in a mixture of fiction and reality, it can be confusing. I think his stories are like the show "The First 48" the stories are true but some names and details have been changed to protect the innocent. Some of the recollections of his comrades dying were so vivid and emotional they had to be true, emotions like that cannot be faked.
The advantage of false stories with a hint of truth, is the ability to conceal the gruesomeness of what really happened while still telling a gut wrenching true story. The disadvantage is that people take fiction too lightly in my opinion, so for most it doesn't sink in as well as some true stories.
this book seems to be going really slow, not much action...is there going to be more going on later?
Questions:
what is a similarity between all the characters?
what is the connection between the physical and emotional things they carry? is there a connection? are they symbolizing something?

symbolism
There are alot interesting characters in the first 4 chapters. I think the most interesting is Daisy. She seems to be an important character, the way she talks and is described is interestingto me. She seems like a sweet girl, even though it is blatently obvious her husband is cheating on her. His affair isnt hidden as much as it should be if he doesn't want people to find out. To me, Daisy really needs a break from Tom, he's not good for her.
This relates to symbolism because Daisy is the equivalent of light and good. Light is shining, radiant, and bright just like Daisys personalitly. Toms mistriss Myrtle is the opposite of Daisy, everything abut her just screams black and dark and evil to me.

Gatsby ch 1
Tom Buchanon: He is racist and bull-headed
"If we don't look out, the white race will be utterly submerged"
Daisy: She is a sad/ heartbroken romantic but she has an energetic personality that none can compare with.
"...the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."
Jordan Baker-A dishonest gossiper.
"...and Miss Baker leaned forward unashamed, trying to hear..."
""You mean you don't know...Tom's got some woman in New York"
Nick Carraway: A judgemental, sarcastic, and very outspoken man
"...I was confused and disgusted as i drove away"

My first impression is that it's a book about Nicks dream to settle down; and have a laid back lifestyle. I think the writing style is very vivid, with lots of detail an imagery.

the great gatsby
I think the book is going to be about prohibition relating to America and important events that relate to America today. I haven't been in class but I've done a bit of research and it seems like it might, have something to do with the dawn of major organized crime in America, something to do with alcohol maybe?
As far as interesting stuff goes, I learned that the ammount of money needed to survive has changed since the 1920's. Back then, under a thousand dollars a year was very common and was a livable income. But now it takes almost ten times that much to live in comfort! A huge wakeup call to how much the value of a dollar has really dropped if you ask me.

Winter break
Over this Winter break there are alot of things o want to get done. First off i need to start going to bed at 3 in the morning and waking up at 3 in the afternoon. Once i accomplish that, I will proceed to hangout with every single one of my friends at one time or another and create many awesome memories. I have some plans to see a couple of the new movies coming out, like True Grit and Little Fockers, but there are some friends of mine that will have no fun sitting in a cold movie theatre for hours so i will have to pick someone who is a movie lover.I plan to resist the urge to go through all of my presents before i get them because that always ruins the suprise. Two words: ROAD TRIP!
Ive been looking forward to this small taste of summer since the first day of school but in the end I'm really glad it is only a two week break because there is still alot of work i need to get done before this semester. Happy holidays Mrs. Gilman see you on Tuesday
