Poetry Out Loud

I chose to read and memorize the poem "Alone" by Edgar Allen Poe, it relates to me because i feel just as alone as this poem does, it speaks to me in a way no other poem ever could, it just parallels my thoiughts and feelings so well its breath taking.

I plan to read this poem putting dramatic pauses where necessary, because this poem isnt about the love of nature or happiness, its about depression, chaos, and being alone so i think dramatic pauses are in order. I also plan to not mess up with words because that would be just very naughty and not look good at all.

I hope this poem doesnt relate to me in the future because its rather depressing, which depresses me, a depressed teenager with depression issues that depress him. :P

Nature vs self reliance

I think it makes alot of sense that I like the outdoors and feel most comfortable outside or in the wilderness. I love to go camping, I enjoy being outside in the summer, and I like to explore woodsy areas around my house! I think it's beautiful when you're out in the woods and you come across a small stream or pond, its just so peaceful. You have a still, at home feeling in your heart, and noone else around to spoil the moment. A deer might hop by, followed by its fawns, just a small reminder that this is indeed nature. I love things like that. Thats what i think Emerson was trying to say to us, that there's something out there greater than you and me,and to find out what it is you must get away from all the noise and all the civilization.

The most important skill in English that i have learned is to understand symbols and grasp poems. I didn't get to do much of that freshman and sophmore yeah, so all of the poems we have gone over in detail for one reason or another, just help me understand how to recognize symbols and certain ideas when i see them. This is useful because I can insert my own ideas into my writing in a more sophisticated way. Another way it helps is to make reading poetry a bit less boring because i understand whats going on and its not all just mumbojumbo to me. It makes me feel smart that i have a vague understanding of poetry because of this class (sucking up) so i thank you, Mrs. Gilman, for the amazing experience and the sucking of the marrow out of life.

injustice

http://www.wsws.org/articles/1999/jan1999/tex-j15.shtml

Thats the case its on.

Our system has alot of flaws these days, and i think the main reason behind that is the level of crime and the amount of people in the United States. Our legal system has much improved since the 16th century and now the flaws in our system are pointless rules and laws that make things way to difficult. For instance in the case of Farris vs. the state of Texas, Farris was convicted of murder in the first degree of a county The court excluded a juror that was against the death penalty; later on the supreme court ruled that the exclusion of a juror on the grounds that they don't support the death penalty is not legal. The state court decided to allow Farris to reappeal. But since his lawyers were trying to reappeal at a federal level the state courts decision didn't affect the case, and Farris was still put to death.

I think it is pretty obvious how unfair that is to Farris, who was most likely innocent and would have been freed if given the chance to reappeal. It must have been horrible for a lwayer to look an innocent man straight in the eye and say "Theres nothing i can do." Stories like this one make me cringe at the complications of our legal system. The system should be much more simple and easier to avoid improper endings like this one.

Why are we reading the crucible?

Well it seems to me we are reading The Crucible by Arthur Miller to learn about several things at once. Its like hitting two birds with one stone. We learn about a historical event, and we learn about literature stuff like plays, literary analysis, vocabulary, and other stuff. Reading books like this one is a great way to gather a bunch of knowledge and get high schoolers to digest it in a short amount of time.

Another reason we are reading this book is so we can use the moral lessons taught in the book in our own lives. For instance, we learn from John Proctor that adultery will vanquish any and all trust from a relationship. There are alot of lessons that we can learn from reading books like this one.
